HOW TO FIND YOUR RING SIZE

The most important thing to note here is, if you are gifting or purchasing a ring from us and you don’t know the size required, you don’t have to panic! We offer a complimentary re-size, re-make or exchange on any ring bought from us, so you can gift worry-free! If you aren’t certain on what size to get, order the ring in it’s current size. After it has been gifted, we can adjust/re-make or exchange as necessary without ruining any special surprises!

If we are unable to re-size a ring due to the design (for example resizing most eternity rings should be avoided), we may suggest a re-make.

The best, most accurate way of determining your ring size is to get one of our friendly team, or another jeweller to size you in person. We offer complimentary sizing in our Topsham shop and are always happy to help you determine your best fit! We appreciate however, that sometimes this can be difficult. If you are buying a ring as a surprise or if travelling to a jeweller is challenging, the following information may help you more accurately determine your size…

HOW TO GET YOUR UK RING SIZE USING A RING THAT ALREADY FITS

If you have a ring that already fits (the correct finger on the correct hand), then you can measure the inside diameter of sed ring and convert it to a UK ring size using the chart below. Try to be as accurate as possible; small changes in the measurement can make a big difference to the size! The inside of the ring you are measuring should be completely round and the ring width should be similar to the one you are ordering. Alternatively, you can ask a jeweller to measure the ring using a ring mandrel tool.

HOW TO GET YOUR UK RING SIZE USING A PIECE OF THREAD OR PAPER

First wrap a piece of thread or a 4mm strip of paper around your finger. Mark the point where it overlaps. This length in mm should be your fingers’ circumference. Use the chart above to convert this measurement into a UK ring size. Ensure the length of thread or paper fits snugly around your finger but moves over your knuckle comfortably.

SIZING YOUR FINGER WITH A PLASIC RING SIZER

If you are ordering a ring from us, simply contact get in touch, providing your name and address and we will post you a complimentary plastic ring sizer. Alternatively, you can order a plastic ring sizer online for just a couple of pounds. These plastic ring sizers work in a similar way to a cable tie (although don’t worry they loosen much easier!); they are easy to use and read. They may not be as accurate as getting sized in a jewellers, but they can be a good place to start!

WEDDING RING SIZING

Traditionally in the UK, wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger on the left hand and sized using an alphabetical scale. This is not always the case; other countries & cultures may wear wedding bands on different hands and different countries and brands use different sizing scales (some numerical & some alphabetical). It can be a bit of a mine field and this can lead to confusion!

It is worth noting here that the fingers on your dominant hand will usually be about a size larger than the same fingers on the less dominant hand. So, for example, because I am right handed, my fourth finger on my left hand (AKA my wedding ring finger) is a size smaller than than my fourth finger on my right hand.

Like with shoe sizes, some ring sizes are more popular, In the UK, the most popular wedding ring sizes for men and women are as follows…

Women’s common sizes = J - Q

Women’s extra popular = L - M

Women’s most popular = M

Men’s common sizes = P - Z

Men’s extra popular = R = U

Men’s most popular = T

Remember there is no ‘normal ring size’. We can, and have, made rings in uk sizes smaller than F and bigger than Z. The beauty of our jewellery collection is that it is all handcrafted and so can be made to order/size.

Also, although not recommended, if you are guessing at a ring size, here is a list of general sizes relating to an approximate XXS-XXL scale. These sizes are all based on wedding ring finger sizes…

For women…

XXS=UK SIZE H, XXS/XS=UK SIZE I, XS=UK SIZE J, XS/S=UK SIZE K, S=UK SIZE L, S/M=UK SIZE M, M=UK SIZE N, M/L=UK SIZE O, L=UK SIZE P, L/XL=UK SIZE Q, XL=UK SIZE R, XL/XXL=UK SIZE S, XXL=UK SIZE T

For men…

XXS=UK SIZE O, XXS/XS=UK SIZE P, XS=UK SIZE Q, XS/S=UK SIZE R, S=UK SIZE S, S/M=UK SIZE T, M=UK SIZE U, M/L=UK SIZE V, L=UK SIZE W, L/XL=UK SIZE X, XL=UK SIZE Y, XL/XXL=UK SIZE Z, XXL=UK SIZE Z+1

FACTORS THAT AFFECT YOUR RING SIZE

Take care to consider that temperature, exercise, time of day, season, weight gain or loss, pregnancy, age and health conditions such as arthritis can all effect your ring size. You may be half a size bigger when your hands are hot or half a size smaller when your hands are cold..or more! Its important to size your finger when your hands are neither too hot or cold. For an even more accurate sizing, try measuring on numerous occasions as this may help you understand how your fingers fluctuate over time and throughout the course of a day or week etc.

SIZING WIDE RINGS

A wider ring will feel tighter than a finer ring in exactly the same size. So, you may have to size up if opting for a wider band.

For example all these rings fit the same finger but they are all different sizes…

(Fine) 2mm wide band = size M

(Regular) 3mm wide band = size N (+1 size from fine ring size)

(Wide) 6mm wide band = size O (+2 sizes from fine ring size)

(Super Wide) 14mm wide band = size Q (+3 sizes from fine ring size)

We have ring sizers in various widths you can try on in the shop. This will ensure you get the perfect fit for the width of band you are ordering.

THE ERIN COX RE-SIZING SERVICE.

We offer re-sizing of ‘Erin Cox’ rings in house. This will be complimentary if the size was unknown upon placing the order. As fingers often increase in size with age we do charge for resizes required a notable time after purchasing.

We also offer re-sizing/alterations of non ‘Erin Cox’ rings, off-site, via our jobbing jeweller. He specialises in alterations of vintage and antique jewellery and all items are posted to him via insured special delivery.

Re-sizing usually takes a couple of weeks.

HOW TO AVOID SPINNING RINGS

Sometimes when rings are top heavy, or when they are for a finger with ‘more knuckle’, a ring might have the tendency to spin. One solution to this is adding in two balls on the inside circumference of the ring. This can help the ring grip onto the finger but still pass over the knuckle.
